Tours

Sintra

Palaces, castles and forest in a fairy-tale village. A half day for the hilltop highlights, or a full day to see it all, in one private electric car.

  • 4 or 8 hours
  • Up to 4 people
  • Private
  • €40 per hour, per vehicle + VAT

Sintra sits in the green hills of the Serra de Sintra, part of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park. The village is surrounded by dense forest, and the mix of palaces and mist makes it feel like something out of a story.

Choose a half day for the hilltop highlights, or a full day that starts at Queluz and Quinta da Regaleira and ends at the Moorish Castle and Pena Palace. Either way you travel with a driver and guide who knows the roads, the best times to avoid the crowds, and the stories behind each place.

The route

Choose your day

Queluz and Quinta da Regaleira in the morning, lunch in the village, and the Moorish Castle and Pena Palace in the afternoon. Time to enjoy each place without rushing.

  1. The pale façade of Queluz National Palace behind a sculpted fountain in its formal gardens

    Stop 1

    Queluz National Palace

Just outside Lisbon, and often called the "Portuguese Versailles" for its resemblance to the French palace, with formal gardens, fountains and richly decorated halls.

  2. Moss-covered stone arches and columns spiralling down the Initiation Well at Quinta da Regaleira

    Stop 2

    Quinta da Regaleira

A romantic estate full of symbols, grottoes and hidden tunnels. Its Initiation Well, a spiral staircase descending into the ground, is one of the most photographed places in Sintra.

    Stop 3

    Lunch in Sintra village

A break in the historic centre, below the white National Palace and its two famous chimneys. Time for lunch and a travesseiro, the local pastry.

  4. The battlements of the Moorish Castle above the rooftops of Sintra and the plains stretching to the horizon

    Stop 4

    Moorish Castle

Believed to have been built in the 8th and 9th centuries to guard the town, its walls run along the ridge with wide views over Sintra and all the way to the ocean.

  5. Aerial view of the red and yellow Pena Palace on its forested hilltop in Sintra

    Stop 5

    Pena National Palace

A striking example of Romanticist architecture, mixing Neo-Gothic, Neo-Manueline, Neo-Islamic and Neo-Renaissance styles in bright red and yellow.

Good to know

Half day or full day?

The half day focuses on the two monuments on the hilltop, the Moorish Castle and Pena Palace, and ends with a stroll in the village. The full day adds Queluz and Quinta da Regaleira, a relaxed lunch, and more time at each place.

Do we need to book palace tickets in advance?

For Pena Palace and Quinta da Regaleira it is a good idea, especially in high season, because tickets are sold for timed entry. We help you choose the times so they fit the route.

Can we change the stops?

Yes. Monserrate, the Capuchin Monastery or Cabo da Roca can replace any of these stops. Tell us what you would like to see and we adjust the day.
